Armada Promos - Keep 'em or Sell 'em

Over the weekend I actually played in an Imperial Assault Regional at the FLGS.  It was a smaller tournament with 10 players, but still the largest IA event that I had played in.  I did decidedly okay, finishing 2-2.  That was good enough for the Top 8 and a set of translucent dice.  Pretty cool, I thought.  If you aren't familiar with IA, there are 6 colors of dice in the game.  I won promo versions of the green and white dice.  Apparently, they gave out blue and black dice last year.  So, I went to eBay to see what a set of blue and black dice would run me.  There weren't many for sale, but they were about $40-$50 for a pair.  Not surprising really.  What was surprising was that the dice that I had just won were going for the same amount.  So, now what?

I don't play Imperial Assault often enough to have a solid collection of promo material, although I have a few items.  I also have some FFG X-Wing promos, although they are mostly older.  I did some trolling around eBay and was surprised at the value I was estimating for these promo dice, counters, and cards.  I'm not really collecting them, so the temptation is to sell them for the money to buy more models.

My Armada promo collection is another story.  It is nearly complete.  The only pieces that I don't have are the dice and rulers given away at Worlds last year.

Let's face it, I am a big nerd.  Big enough to have a blog a bout a miniature starship game.  I happily carry my Armada fleets around in the backpack I won at GenCon last summer.  I enjoy collecting all of the various bits of swag that FFG has produced.  I like that I'm the only one in the area with white acrylic range rulers.

But do I like it to the tune of hundreds of dollars?

If I sold my dice, rulers, cards, and my defense tokens I would have significantly more cash in my wallet.  But I would be down a whole bunch of trophy material.

I'm genuinely conflicted.

I love the shiny promo materials, but my gaming budget never has enough in it to buy all of the toys that I want.  What's a nerd to do?

  1. If it's Armada....keep it. Spoils of war. Haha.
Seriously it all depends on the item. I've kept all the cards and medals and stuff but I didn't really like the acrylic range rulers. So I sold them on ebay for £12 and bought myself another Corvette. If you don't play IA that often and aren't worried about the dice rather sell them to someone who wants them and you can buy some more plastic starships

  2. I sell as needed. I sold xwing dice and alt art card for $230. This paid for my trip to the tacoma regional. I Agree with the trophy aspect as i intended to sell all my regionals swag. After winning im having a hard time. Although all the bubbles in the dice will cause me to sell em. I played one game with them and they roll crits like crazy.

  4. I would consider selling the non-armada stuff if you don't use it, as a) it gives you the cash and b) allows someone else to enjoy it / compete their collection.

However, don't sell your Armada stuff! Those shiny prizes have been won with hard fought nerd blood, sweat and tears. Gotta collect the set, and show off the toys when you play!
